Prof. Mathias Uhlén, Ph.D.
Professor of Microbiology, Royal Institute of Technology
Prof. Uhlén is a co-founder of Affibody and Professor of Microbiology at the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH), Stockholm, Sweden. He was Vice-President of the KTH from 1999-2001. In the early 1980s, Prof. Uhlén cloned and characterized staphylococcal protein A. In the late 1980s, he published research on the use of magnetic microspheres with streptavidin for automated solid phase applications. In the 1990s, his group developed the Affibody® technology. Prof. Uhlén and colleagues also invented a new strategy for DNA analysis called Pyrosequencing. Prof. Uhlén is member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Science (IVA), the Royal Swedish Academy of Science (KVA) and the European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO). He is Vice-President of the European Proteomics Association (EuPA) and member of the Human Proteome Organization (HUPO) council. He is currently working on the Human Protein Resource Project (HPR), which aims to map the human proteome (www.proteinatlas.org). He is the founder of Pyrosequencing AB (Biotage AB), Affibody AB, SweTreeGenomics AB, Magnetic Biosolutions AB and Creative Peptides AB. Prof. Uhlén has published more than 280 articles focused on the development and use of affinity reagents in biotechnology and biomedicine.
