The Affibody® technology includes the Affibody® molecules and Affibody’s proprietary albumin binding technology.
The company has created a large library of Affibody® molecules, from which binders to given targets are selected. Key features of Affibody® molecules include; robustness, small size, specific target recognition, efficient and spontaneous folding and rapid clearance from the circulation. Affibody® molecules can be produced using either recombinant bacteria or peptide synthesis.
Affibody’s albumin binding technology extends the half-life of biopharmaceuticals. The core of the technology is the Albumin Binding Domain (ABD), a small binding protein engineered to bind human serum albumin with a very high affinity (KD below 500 fM). Due to the extremely tight binding, the complex behaves as a serum albumin fusion protein. Thereby, a fusion protein containing ABD obtains a half-life approaching the halflife of serum albumin and displays a rapid and wide biodistribution, which is similar to serum albumin and in contrast to antibodies. Affibody’s ABD fusion has an advantage over albumin fusion proteins in terms of facilitated production, and is protected by separate Affibody intellectual property rights.
