The Affibody® technology includes the Affibody® molecules and Albumod™, Affibody’s proprietary albumin binding technology.

Affibody® molecules
Cancer therapy based on Affibody® molecules will be a powerful complement to conventional first and second line treatments, and there are several potential benefits compared to traditional methods including favorable diffusion and tumor penetration resulting from the small size. In addition, high affinity and specific binding lead to limited side effects.

Affibody® molecules with specificity and selectivity for tumor markers can be used for non-invasive early detection of tumors, and to monitor disease by detecting tumor progression or regression in response to cancer therapy.

The company has created a large library of Affibody® molecules, from which binders to given targets are selected. Key features of Affibody® molecules include; robustness, small size, specific target recognition, efficient and spontaneous folding and rapid clearance from the circulation. Affibody® molecules can be produced using either recombinant bacteria or peptide synthesis.

Albumod™ platform
The Albumod™ technology extends the half-life of biopharmaceuticals. The core of the technology is the Albumin Binding Domain (ABD), a small binding protein engineered to bind human serum albumin with a very high affinity. Due to the extremely tight binding, the complex behaves as a serum albumin fusion protein. Thereby, a fusion protein containing ABD obtains a half-life approaching the half-life of serum albumin and displays a rapid and wide biodistribution, which is similar to serum albumin and in contrast to antibodies. Affibody’s Albumod™ technology has an advantage over albumin fusion proteins in terms of facilitated production, and is protected by separate Affibody intellectual property rights.
